On our Whimsicle Facebook page a few weeks ago, I had asked what kind of laundry detergent everyone used.  I was amazed by the number of savvy women who actually make their own! I couldn’t resist.  JoAnn and I decided to try it out and we were blown away by how easy it was and the sheer amount of soap it makes.

Supplies:

Box Borax

Box Washing Soap

Air Tight Container

Lavender (or whatever scent you want)

Fels Naptha OR Ivory Soap

VERY large mixing bowl

To begin, cut up your Fels Naptha into manageable size pieces and place into your food processor.

If you do not have a food processor you can use a grater, it will just take you much longer.

When you are done grinding, it should look like this:

Add 1 cup washing soda and 1 cup borax. Stir it up!

If you purchased an essential oil for smell, add droplets until you are happy with the fragrance.  We added about 10 drops.  The Fels Naptha version makes almost one full mason jar container.  This is why we loved the ivory soap version.

Follow the same steps as above, but start with 10 bars of ivory soap.  The key is to grind this soap with the 1 whole box of washing soda and 1 whole box of borax at the same time.  That way the soap won’t clump.

Add about 15-20 drops of your essential oil to this recipe.  It makes A LOT more.

Use about 1/2 cup of soap depending on how dirty your family is.  I absolutely love this! Stay tuned for Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent and Homemade Stain Remover (I need to get through this batch first).
