How a Planner Can Keep You Sane

I make no secret that I struggle with anxiety and depression.
The constant rising feeling of panic I feel in my worst moments.
Combined with the belief that nothing I do will ever make a difference, so why even bother?

And can I say, they suck.

When they’re at their worst, I rely on a simple system that I set up in my planner.

Thus, you sit there in a state of stunned panic – worried that if you devote your time to one endeavor, another more worthy task won’t get completed.
Argh! It’s enough to make anyone insane, right?
Here’s how I tackle it and get more stuff done everyday than I did before I discovered the Living Well Planner.

I realize that the times I feel the most resentful of my husband’s “free” time or overwhelmed with all the things are when I’m neglecting my own happiness.

Here’s how it works.
Every planner starts with a page where you map out your long-term goals for the year. The coolest part of the Living Well Planner is that you don’t need to wait until January to begin.

At the beginning of every month, you review your yearly long-term goals and base your monthly goals on that.

How I stay productive every week
Ruth also created these sticky notes called the Weekly Wizard.
Every Friday (or honestly, Monday morning), I decide what my focus is for the week.
- I then name the tasks that get me closer to that goal in the A column
- All the tasks I SHOULD do go in the B Column
- And all the tasks that would be NICE to do go in the C column.
Finally, it’s time blocking time.
I look at the entire week and write in the prior commitments that I already have.
Stuff like:
Kid dance lessons
Doctor appointments
Dates set with friends
Then, I plan all the activities in my A column. If it doesn’t work on paper, it doesn’t work.
I always block about 50% more time than I think each task will take. If you’re anything like me and horribly underestimate your time, this will work for you, too.
I draw a box around each with these erasable markers. Each marker is color coordinated with a specific task so that with a quick look I can see how I’m spending a majority of my time.
