How I Tripled My Blog Pageviews
How I Increased my Ad Revenue
OK, I’m going to confess it:
I paginated.
In some blogging circles, that is the “baddest” of bad words.
Some people think it connotes being a sellout or “tricking the system.”
I’m here to yell it from the rooftops:
“PAGINATION rocks and I am NEVER going back!”
If you’re unsure about pagination, know that you are reading a paginated post right now. It is simply inserting logical page breaks into a long post.
Instead of seeing a behemoth amount of text, I’ve chunked it into manageable pieces of information that are much easier to digest.
As a reader, you get a prettier and simpler reading experience. From a psychology standpoint, you are more likely to stay engaged with my content since that one action of clicking the “NEXT” button keeps you interested.
From a money making standpoint, pagination increases ad revenue. I get paid every time a page loads on my blog. Pagination works very well as long as I’m still serving my audience.
If I wasn’t serving my audience, visits to my blog would decrease. People would drop off and not click through.
But that hasn’t been the case. I started paginating at the beginning of February. Here is a comparison between that month and the previous:
All wonderful things.
I test and monitor my pagination constantly. If I find that my readers are not clicking through, I know that part of my post is not compelling enough and I go revise it. Paginating gives me tons of useful information about what my readers want.
Now, to get my readers to my posts. Here’s how I do that..
Wow you’re doing amazingly well! I’m really trying to grow too and I’ve stated paginating long posts, but most of mine aren’t that long so it doesn’t make as much sense. That’s a great sponsored post total. That’s definitely what I am working toward.
Thanks Julie! Something I didn’t mention is that I don’t do any more sponsored posts than I did at the beginning of blogging. But I have been charging and getting paid more for them.
I’m still on the fence about pagination. You’ve done a great job with it in this post which is inspiring. Thanks for the tips!
Hi Rebecca! I was honestly on the fence too until I tried it 🙂 Thank you for your kind words!
JoAnn,
How exciting. You do a good job with the whole “Next” page thing by leaving a sort of cliffhanger. You are actually using the Zeigarnik Effect and it works well in marketing and with your blog post!
I’m a freelance writer and own several blogs. I just started a new blog and am trying to find ways to increase my traffic and engagement. Thanks for these tips!
I definitely have to get my newsletter up and running soon!
Hi, Ella! Thanks for naming it for me 🙂 Good luck in your own blogs! It’s daunting when you are starting out on a new project!
What website do you run your blog though?
Hi Katie! I use Bluhost for hosting and manage it on WordPress.
